What's Different This Year?

This year we have decided to help some of our families move out of the "Red."  To help those who would love to join us, but their family cost for registration is too tight, we are waiving registration fees for ALL Cubs and Coyotes attending with their families this year (2012).  Hopefully this will allow more of our community the opportunity to join us in fellowship.  The Cubs and Coyotes must be registered prior to May 1, 2012, and accompanied by a family member.  We look forward to sharing our community's children and watching them from year to year as they grow and become integral parts of our community.   Join us, bring the children, and let's enjoy one another!!

In past years, the Monday evening Opening Circle has been lightly attended.  There is a lot of important information that is given out at the start of our week, and the Board feels that it is important to the entire WUULF community that we have 100% attendance.  To encourage this, we will be handing out meal tickets at Opening Circle on Monday June 18 after dinner in the Lower Pavilion.  As we begin our week together, we look forward to seeing everyone.

Volunteering

Over the years, the ongoing volunteerism and commitment of WUULF's participations has led to its success.  We want and need additional people willing to contribute their gifts and resources to WUULF in new ways; in return you'll receive valuable and intangible rewards.  Here are some ways you can help:

   •   As in recent years, we are asking all attendees to support Social Hour by bringing snacks or drinks (non-alcoholic as well as alcohol).

   •   We are asking all adults, those with and without little ones, to volunteer and engage with our youth.  Our youth will be encouraged to do the same so expect the little ones to engage you.

WUULF Youth Program Orientation

Youth Program Orientation will be included in the Orientation meeting.  As a community, we all need to understand the expectations of children and parents.  Board member Meg Evans and the youth programs staff will be introduced, and we will discuss the youth program and highlight their activities for the week.  WUULF is an Intergenerational Camp and we will discuss what that means to the camp as a whole.  Click the Children/Youth tab at the top of this page for more information.

"Inner Practices for Wellness", Lower Pavilion, 9:15 a.m.

Throughout the week, we will engage in a wide variety of experiential activities that develop well-being, life balance, integration, and access to inner guidance.  The practices will involve mediums such as visualization, meditation, writing, movement and breathing exercises, and discussion (mainly in dyads or small groups). Jim and Ruth

Jim Sharon, Ed.D., will be our theme speaker on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning.  Jim is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Centennial, CO, with thirty-five-years of experience working with integrative wellness, men's issues, stress management, couple's counseling, as well as other manifestations of spiritual direction.  Jim recently released the anthology: Ordinary Men, Extraordinary Lives: Defining Moments.

Ruth Sharon will work with our youth groups at various times on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.  Ruth is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) and a wellness coach. Drawing on her experience as an elementary school teacher, K-12 school counselor and college psychology instructor, Ruth works with individuals, couples and families seeking guidance for a variety of concerns and life challenges.

Pool

Open Swim, Pool, 1:00 p.m (Daily)

Try to find some personal time to enjoy the oh-so invigorating (unheated except by the warm high desert sun) water.  Remember your towel and sunscreen!

Choir, with Julia McKay, Chapel, 1:00 p.m.

Choir

Rev Julia will direct our WUULF choir again this year!  If you missed this opportunity last year, make sure that you find time to bring your voice to the group for some FUN and beauty.  We will work with some improvisational singing as well as choral works.  Rev Julia identifies as a cultural creative - one who uses various expressive arts as tools for personal transformation and cultural change.  She has participated in many forms of public arts ministry and is fascinated by the power of music and the arts to heal, unite, and energize people in community. Come and experience connection with your sense of spirit and soul through music!

Young Adult Programming, 1:00 p.m.

We are delighted that we have a growing group of amazing young adults at WUULF, and we have created a program that we hope will appeal to their interests while keeping them integrated with our intergenerational community.  The format allows for participation in theme, afternoons for co-creating activities of interest to the group or joining any event on the WUULF schedule, as well as evenings with the whole community.  For complete information on this program, see the Young Adult section of the Youth Page.

Bike Ride on Ghost Ranch, Meet at Lower Pavilion Porch, 1:00 p.m.

Join us for a moderately strenuous mountain bike ride in the Ghost Ranch area.  We will travel west to the airstrip and to the mile long smooth paved road used for the filming of Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.  A quick dip in Lake Abiquiu is a possibility.  Bring plenty of water, snacks, a camera, your bike and helmet.  Be prepared for awe-inspiring scenery intermixed with lots of fun.  We will be back to the ranch by Social Hour.

Drumming Circle, Wisdom Tree, 1:15 p.m.

Young Drummer

James Probasco will lead the circle, teaching the group some simple (and not so simple if you're inclined!) African drumming rhythms.  If you have a favorite rhythm or chant, share it with the circle. Bring your drums or other rhythm instruments.  There will be some community drums available as well, so join us at the tree.

I-Ching, with Clay Bosler, Lower Pavilion, 2:45 p.m.

"The Book of Changes -- I Ching in Chinese -- is unquestionably one of the most important books in the world's literature.  Its origin goes back to mythical antiquity, and it has occupied the attention of the most eminent scholars of China down to the present day.  Nearly all that is greatest and most significant in the three thousand years of Chinese cultural history has either taken its inspiration from this book, or has exerted an influence on the interpretation of its text.  Therefore it may safely be said that the seasoned wisdom of thousands of years has gone into the making of the I Ching.  Small wonder then that both of the two branches of Chinese philosophy, Confucianism and Taoism, have their common roots here.  The book sheds new light on many a secret hidden in the often puzzling modes of thought of that mysterious sage, Lao-tse, and of his pupils, as well as on many ideas that appear in the Confucian tradition as axioms, accepted without further examination."

So begins Richard Wilhelm's classic introduction of the I Ching to the Western world.  For over 5,000 years, a significant percentage of humanity has been consulting this book in a variety of ways to better understand the world and their place in it.  We'll spend a bit of time learning about this book that has inspired so many, and we'll also spend some time playing with one of the classic ways to "consult the oracle" concerning issues both great and small in our own lives.

Whether you come to simply gain a bit of insight into the thinking and history of the Chinese, or whether you're itching to dive into the occult practices of predicting the future, we'll certainly have a good time together!

Social Hour, Lower Pavilion Patio,  4:30 p.m.

Every afternoon at 4:30 p.m., the WUULF community gathers at the Lower Pavilion porch area for some social time prior to dinner. Social Hour Everyone in the community provides potluck snacks and beverages for the daily Social Hour. This has generated many enthusiastically positive comments, with people so much enjoying sharing their favorite brew (or homebrew- thanks again, Frank!) pop, and snacks, that we made it a tradition. So, plan to bring your snacks and drinks to share again! Since Social Hour is just before dinner, light snacks are best, and can be dropped off at registration to be distributed by volunteers throughout the week. Thank you all for your generosity and wonderful party-tude! Out of respect for our Ghost Ranch hosts and fellow guests, participants are gently reminded to contain social hour beverages to the Lower Pavilion and patio area. Additionally, although Ghost Ranch has a recycling program, we feel that WUULF can do more to reduce our impact on the local environment (and the world in general!) by minimizing our disposables usage. To that end, during the daily social hours, we will be utilizing bulk containers for dispensing soft drinks, water, lemonade and wine. We would encourage you to think about bringing a suitable drink container or cup to reuse during the week, thus reducing our waste and recyclable products.

Game Night, Lower Pavilion, 7:00 p.m.

Bring your favorite board game or just a deck of cards, and join us in the Lower Pavilion for an evening of games. WUULF Board members will make sure we have a few games that you can borrow. It's a great way to meet people or spend time with old friends.

Chimney Rock Hike, meet at Lower Pavilion Porch, 8:45 p.m.

Chimney Rock

SunsetChimney Rock Trail is the most popular daytime Ghost Ranch hike, but how about on a moonless night! Experience the "Valley of the Shining Stone" in its dark, mysterious magnificence. Although this trail is not too difficult, please stay on the trail and exercise caution. Part of this hike has a steep drop off. Remember to bring flashlights and/or headlamps

Special Breakfast, Dining Hall, 5:30 a.m. Attention all Rafters

A special continental breakfast will be served to accommodate your early morning departure. Don't forget to go behind the dining hall to make a sack lunch!

Raft Trip Full Day, leaves Lower Pavilion, 6:00 a.m. (Must be pre-registered)

This trip is rated as one of the best in the country.  It is not for the beginner. The trip is entirely contained in the black, lava walls of the Rio Grande Gorge, whose walls range up to 1000 ft. in height. The gradient profile of the river in the Taos Box Canyon begins with two miles of fairly gentle drops (Class I), then nine miles of approximate 35 ft. per mile gradient (Class II-IV), culminating in five miles of approximate 55 ft. per mile (Class IV-IV+). This latter section, beginning at the precipitous Powerline Falls includes almost continuous whitewater, through drops with names like Rock Garden, Boatreamer, Screaming Lefthand Turn, and Sunset. Participants must be at least 12 years of age and weigh 90 lbs. or more. Depending on water levels, trips may be changed or cancelled. See the Registration Form for updated cost information.

Yoga, Under the Wisdom Tree, 6:30 a.m.

Sunrise at the Labyrinth, Meet at Dining Hall porch, 6:30 a.m.

Labyrinth

Join us as we briefly look at the history of the labyrinth and ways you can use it in your life. Then we will walk the labyrinth together. The labyrinth is a path to the center of the soul. While the path is the same for all who walk it, we carry a variety of religious and cultural traditions, so our experiences are highly personal and individual. We encourage anyone to also find another time during the week to do a more solitary walking. The Labyrinth is on the far side of the Dining Hall above the arroyo, and Labyrinth brochures are available at the front desk. Meet at the Dining Hall porch.

Community Gathering, Under the Wisdom Tree, 8:30 a.m.

New!

Drawing Workshop: "Contours", with Ib Birgers, Lower Pavilion, 9:15 a.m.

Contour drawing is fun (as in, a bit reckless), it'll reflect your intuitive nature (true enough), it facilitates synaptic strength (surely), you'll develop an eye for observing small and, hopefully, quirky things (family and friends may or may not be amazed). As it's indifferent to skill level, it doesn't matter one whit if you think you're ungifted, or accomplished, or in between.

MATERIALS: bring a soft pencil, 2B or 3B, and pocket pencil sharpener and an 8x10" or larger sketchbook for class work. Bring a pen and a 5½ x 8½" sketch pad, one that's easy to carry around for sketching at any and all of the rich social opportunities during the week. No need for an eraser as using one when contour drawing would be bizarre.

Raft Trip - Half Day, leaves Lower Pavilion, 11:30 a.m. (Must be pre-registered, pack a lunch before departing)

This is a very popular half-day trip.  This trip is well suited for families and first time rafters looking for a little excitement.  You will navigate Class I to Class III rapids (easy to moderately challenging) with names like Big Rock, the Narrows and Sousehole.  This trip is approximately 2½ to 3 hours in length.   Remember your sunscreen! Depending on water levels in the Rio Grande, trips may be changed or cancelled. See the Registration Form for cost information.

New!

Stitch & Bitch, with Peggy Priest, Lower Pavilion, 1:00 p.m.

Our moderator will bring discussion questions for the crafters to contemplate about moral, ethical and personal conundrums. A knitting expert will be on hand for instruction, so bring your knitting. All crafters are welcome. Come and join our discussion circle.

Ghost Ranch Tour, Meet at Lower Pavilion Porch, 1:00 p.m.

Join a Ghost Ranch guide for a van tour of the Ghost Ranch property, visiting sites that inspired Georgia O'Keeffe. This tour will last two hours and is limited to 10 participants. Cost is $10 per person, and reservations can be made at Monday's registration, or on the Registration Form

Open Swim, Pool, 1:00 p.m

Armenian Line Dancing Lower Pavilion, 1:00 p.m.

Longtime WUULF attendee Sue Shamshoian-Sakamoto will teach traditional Armenian folk, solo and partner dances with traditional Armenian folk music.

New!

Henna with Nuna Bosler, Wisdom Tree, 2:45 p.m.

Gather under the big tree to practice the ancient art of Mehndi-henna body art.  Don't worry if you "can't draw"-neither can I, and I have a great time with henna.  Simple designs are often the most effective, and you can get a long way with dots and lines. :)  Learn about the history and traditions of Mehndi, mix up a batch of your own, and practice application techniques.

We will start with mixing our own henna paste from pure body art quality henna powder (never use henna designed for hair for body art, and never EVER use "black henna"--it is very dangerous).  Then we'll try our hands at applying designs, and learn simple techniques to set the henna, as well as ways to fix mistakes using simple household items as "erasers".  Those who are interested can also experiment with "haldi"--dyeing the skin with turmeric.  The bright gold tones of turmeric can be used to highlight henna body art.  Those interested in this may want to consider attending Wednesday's class to apply henna, then highlight it with haldi on Friday.

Both classes will be the same-you can attend one or both.  If you want to work with your own batch of henna, plan to attend both: make it on Wednesday, and use it on Friday.  It requires at least 24 hours to release dye.  I will be preparing paste ahead of time for use in each class, so participants will be able to practice designs right away, while their own paste matures.

Social Hour, Lower Pavilion Patio,  4:30 p.m.

Solstice Celebration at Echo Amphitheatre, leave from Lower Pavilion, 6:45 p.m.

Solstice Celebration

Solstice CelebrationThis year we are fortunate to be at Ghost Ranch on the actual day of the Summer Solstice.  Join us for a moving and inspirational event led by a multigenerational group of volunteers.  Experience the party at Echo Amphitheater as we celebrate the changing of the season.  In Unitarian and WUULF tradition, join all of the pagans, and pagans at heart, for a brief sunset Solstice ritual followed by flutes, chants, drumming, dancing, and other sacred rhythms shared in this special place inside Mother Earth.  All instruments welcome, but remember that you need to carry your stuff up the hill and several flights of stairs! Brawny guys (or gals!) will be recruited as necessary to help carry those unable to make the hike.  Echo Amphitheater is about a ten-minute drive from Ghost Ranch. Remember to bring your flashlights, jackets and bug repellant.

Full Day Adventure around Chavez Canyon, Meet at Lower Pavilion Porch after the Community Gathering.

Chavez Canyon

This full day adventure will encompass a difficult hike and a visit to a Monastery or a splash in the Chama River.  Chavez Canyon is a beautiful slot canyon near the Christ in the Desert Monastery, in the Chama River Canyon Wilderness.  This hike will challenge everyone.   It involves a large amount of 'slick rock' and 'slot' rock scrambling and downhill hiking.  We will provide rope assistance.  Teamwork is a must on this 5 hour round trip hike.

After our hike some of us may wish to take a side trip to the Christ in the Desert Monastery or a dip into the Chama River.  The Monastery should have their tasting room open in 2012.  We will be carpooling from the Lower Pavilion leaving right after the Community Gathering.  Prepare a sack lunch Friday morning at the dining hall.  Bring plenty of water, sturdy shoes or boots, and a camera.  We will be back to Ghost Ranch by Social Hour.

Chautauqua as Buckminster Fuller, by Petr Jandácek, Lower Pavilion, 1:15 p.m.

Buckminster Fuller

You loved Petr Jandácek last year when he brought Otzi, the Ice Man to WUULF.  Petr is back this year in the persona of Buckminster "Bucky" Fuller, world-famous architect, grandson of a Unitarian minister and grandnephew of Transcendentalist author Margaret Fuller.

A revolutionary inventor, Fuller is most famous for perfecting the geodesic dome.  Ask questions of "Bucky" himself and of the actor who portrays him.  Petr Jandácek has bragging rights in that he interacted personally with B. Fuller at Illinois State University at Illinois Institute of Technology (Institute of Design - American Bauhaus), and through personal correspondence with B. Fuller.  Jandácek and his wife, Louise, have built a geodesic dome as their home in Los Alamos.

You don't need to organize your group-the Tribe will match up the truth and fiction tellers to create groups of three.

At this time, the WUULF adult community gathers to witness the evolution in our teens' lives and to acknowledge this step along the path to adulthood. We encourage attendance by the entire adult community. A reception for the participants follows.
